TOLEDO, Ohio (AP) — A child playing with a candle, lighter or matches started an apartment fire that killed seven youngsters, fire investigators announced Tuesday. An inquiry was still under way to determine if the children were home alone.
The fire started on a mattress in an upstairs bedroom where some of the children were playing Sunday afternoon, fire investigator Andre Tiggs said. "It was one of the kids," he said. "We knew it was a human act."
The children, ages 6 months to 7 years, died from smoke inhalation. Six were siblings, the seventh was a cousin.
Their bodies were found in two upstairs bedrooms. Some were under their beds; others were in closets.
