Young writer's contest

The Deseret Morning News is inviting Utah's young writers to submit their essay entries to the newspaper's second annual Young Writers Contest.

The contest is open to juniors and seniors attending Utah's public and private schools.

The first-place prize is $1,000, second place is $500 and third place is $250. The three winning essays will be published in the Deseret Morning News.

Entries should be no more than 1,000 words in length and should reflect this year's contest theme: "A hero in my life."

"The Deseret Morning News has a great reverence for good writing," said John Hughes, the paper's editor and chief operating officer. "The Deseret Morning News has a great interest in encouraging good writing in the state's schools."

Entries must be received at the newspaper by 5 p.m. Nov. 12. The winners will be announced later that month.
