WEST VALLEY CITY — A young man was shot to death in front of a four-plex Wednesday night.
Police did not release the name of the man, in his late teens. The shooting had "gang overtones," West Valley Assistant Police Chief Craig Black said, but they released few details about the events that precipitated the 8:45 p.m. incident in a neighborhood of small apartments near 2500 South and 1800 West.
The man was shot at multiple times and was struck in the head. He fell onto a cement slab outside a staircase leading to four units, Black said.
Paramedics worked on the man, but he died at the scene. The shooter was seen leaving in a vehicle, Black said. Police did not release any specific details about the vehicle or about any people they were searching for.
"Based on what we're hearing, we're working on the assumption that there is more than one person in the suspect vehicle," Black said. Police were interviewing witnesses, but nobody had been arrested.
"The neighborhood has been known for gang activity in the past," Black said. "The early descriptions of the suspects leads us to believe" they were affiliated with a gang.
