Historical group honors News duo

SHARE Historical group honors News duo

The Utah State Historical Society has announced winners in 21 award categories for 2004. Included in the honorees are Jerry and Donna Kemp Spangler, both Deseret Morning News writers.

The awards were announced at the society's annual meeting Thursday.

The Spanglers received the Outstanding Achievement Award in Media for writing "Snakes and Axle Grease: A Guide to the History, Archaeology and Rock Art of Nine Mile Canyon."

Also honored were three new fellows for their distinguished research and publication: Richard Sadler, Floyd O'Neill and Peter Goss.

The Historical Society also honored three Honorary Life Members: William MacKinnon, David Bigler and Jay Haymond were honored for distinguished service to the state and the society.

Other awards given this year were:

Janet Wilcox and Laverne Tate of Blue Mountain Shadows: Outstanding Achievement Award in Public History for the Cottonwood and Elk Ridge Mining Era interviews and publications.

The National Society of the Sons of Utah Pioneers: Outstanding Service Award in Community Education for education about Utah's pioneer period.

Gerri Herrera: Outstanding Service Award in Teaching for history/social studies programs for students.

Roger McDonough: Outstanding Service Award in Media for the "Moments in Salt Lake City" CD and KCPW radio segments.

Max Harward: Outstanding Service Award in Public History for Antelope Island publications.

Carol Radinger: Outstanding Service Award in Public History for donation of the Ferry dresses collection.

Mike C. Korologos: Service Award in Public History for donation of Olympic bid items.

Kennecott Utah Copper and Louis J. Cononelos: Outstanding Service Award in Public History for preserving the Victory Flat Society papers.

Waldo Wilcox: Special Commendation Award for the protection and preservation of the archaeological and historical resources of the Range Creek area.

William P. MacKinnon: Dale L. Morgan Award for the best scholarly article of 2003 in the Utah Historical Quarterly.

Katie Clark Blakesley: Morris S. Rosenblatt Award for the best general interest article in the Utah Historical Quarterly.

Richard Francaviglia: Nick Yengich Memorial Award for the editors' choice article in the Utah Historical Quarterly.

Gary Topping: Best Utah History Book Award for "Utah Historians and the Reconstruction of Western History."

Shannon A. Novak and Derinna Kopp: Best Utah History Article Award for best article outside Utah Historical Quarterly.
