ST. GEORGE — A wacky game at Hansen Stadium saw the No. 1-ranked Dixie State Rebels defeated No. 18 Arizona Western 68-51.
Quarterback Danny Southwick passed for 505 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for two more TDs, and the Rebels scored the last 27 points of the games to improve to 5-0 on the season.
It was head coach Greg Croshaw's 200th career victory and it was a wild one. The two teams combined for more than a thousand yards of offense and 16 touchdowns.
"It seemed like we were going for 200 points and it also seemed like we might have needed them," Croshaw said. "This is one of the worst defensive jobs we've done in the time I've been coach."
Down 51-41 with 9:20 left to play, Dixie State went 71 yards in five plays, forced a punt, then went 71 yards again, this time on seven plays to take a 55-51 lead. A Matador fumble led to another score and J.T Diederichs scored his fourth touchdown of the game with two minutes to play to cap the scoring.
