Beavers chop 'Cats in 3 straight games

OREM — Mention Beaver High and it's not volleyball that comes first to mind.

With eight state titles, including the last four in a row, it's more likely that basketball would be the sport associated with the school's female athletes.

"It's exciting," said outside hitter Heather Hillock, after the team's quarterfinal win over South Summit, 25-19, 25-23, 25-16. "It's different because we don't have much of a tradition in volleyball."

The Beavers entered the tournament at UVSC a No. 1 seed from Region 13 and are currently ranked third in the state. So it may seem odd that they feel they are a bit of a surprise in the tournament.

"I like going in as the underdog because you can surprise teams," she said.

Beaver's season has been interesting, as it prefers to give the other team a little hope before beating them.

"Sometimes the girls get a little timid," said coach Debra Marshall. "We usually start a little slower, but today we started strong in both matches. We didn't have to fight back, and it was kind of nice."

Marshall said she expected the team to do well as it's made up of six "really strong seniors, who've been playing together since they were freshmen."

The Beavers held off a comeback by South Summit in the first game, and then bounced back from any run the Wildcats made in the second two games. Hillock led the offense with 11 kills, while Alex Starbuck added 10 kills and several great plays at the net.

The Wildcats had impressive performances from Whitney Richins and Chelsea Littledike.

The Beavers face top-ranked San Juan in the semifinals today at 12:30 p.m. The Broncos defeated North Summit in four games.

Only two first-round matches went more than three games, with South Summit needing five games to beat North Sevier, 18-25, 25-14, 17-25, 25-23, 15-8; and Monticello defeating Grand in four, 26-24, 25-10, 13-25, 25-13.

Second-ranked Richfield swept both matches it played to advance to the semifinals, where the Wildcats will meet South Sevier.
