Lee Benson's column "Stand up for Rights of Children" (Oct. 4) represented a false interpretation of Amendment 3. He has failed to consider the countless children who currently live in alternative homes and children who may themselves grow up and discover they are gay. Benson fails to acknowledge that Amendment 3 does absolutely nothing to advance or protect marriage in Utah, because Utah's laws state repeatedly that marriage is between a man and a woman. He cannot distinguish between his personal beliefs and government granted rights. Most Utahns are more fair-minded than Benson. They realize that giving children of gay families fewer rights than heterosexual families is beyond discriminatory — it's hurtful and malicious.
