Provo, Springville upsets throw off most predictions

Provo and Springville victories were not anticipated by most entrants in last week's Deseret Morning News Grid Picks contest for Utah Valley prep football games.

As a result, no prognosticator correctly picked more than eight of the 10 games in the contest.

Top pickers last week were Sheila Andreasen, Brigham City; Mont Wade, Heber City; Kurt Fraughton, American Fork; Chad Smith, Lehi; Trevor Varney, Highland; Mike Skogerboe, Salt Lake City; Dan Mangelson, American Fork. They each earn a Deseret Morning News Grid Picks T-shirt.

This week's contest ends at noon Thursday. Readers can enter online at deseretnews.com/utahcounty and pick the winners of: Timpanogos at Lehi, Payson at Spanish Fork, Provo at Springville, Lone Peak at Orem, Pleasant Grove at Mountain View, Timpview at American Fork, Wasatch at Morgan, Juab at Gunnison, South Summit at Manti, and Emery at Park City. The Thunderbirds-Cavemen game is the tiebreaker game, where entrants also predict the final score.

UTAH COUNTY CONTEST RULES: Ballots are published online each week, Aug. 23 through Oct. 18. Each weekly contest ends at noon Friday. However, if the contest includes a Thursday game, the contest will end at noon the day of the earliest game. You may enter via www.deseretnews.com anytime before the deadline.

Only one entry each week per person allowed. A valid e-mail address must accompany each entry; one entry per e-mail address per week. Entrants must be at least 13 years old.

Mark boxes to predict winners. Predict the score and the winner of the weekly tiebreaker game, which counts as one of the 10 games listed each week. Ties will be broken using the score of the tiebreaker game. If that does not resolve ties, a random selection by computer will be used.

Each week, the seven entrants predicting the most games correctly each win a Grid Picks T-shirt. Winners will be notified by mail. Prizes must be picked up during regular business hours at the Deseret Morning News Utah County Bureau, 1280 S. 800 East, Suite 300, Orem, at least one week after the contest ends but no later than Dec. 30, 2004.

Employees, agents and correspondents of the Deseret Morning News, the Newspaper Agency Corp., other news media and their families are ineligible. Entries may not be submitted in the names of others. Games postponed, canceled or erroneously listed are not figured in final grading. For information, call 801-237-2161. Address questions to webmaster@desnews.com.
