Dog theft spurs charges

A man who allegedly stole another man's pregnant dog to recover money from a debt was charged Wednesday in 3rd District Court.

The owner noticed his dog was missing on July 24. The 4-year-old female, an American pit bull terrier named Ginger, had papers authenticating her bloodline. Ginger was valued at $300 to $500. The puppies were still in utero but were expected to sell for about $500 each, charges state.

The owner went around the neighborhood, near 700 South and 1100 West, asking people to keep their eyes open for the dog. A man approached the owner and announced he had taken the dog and sold it, charges state.

Police later learned the man actually had the dog at the time of the conversation but quickly got rid of it, charges state. He said the dog's owner owed him $700 or $800, charges state.

The 20-year-old man was charged with theft by receiving stolen property, a class A misdemeanor.
