JACKSON, Mich. (AP) — A woman whose 6-year-old son was killed while playing with a loaded gun was sentenced Wednesday to a month in jail.

Candilynn J. Anderson, 27, pleaded no contest to involuntary manslaughter in the death of D'juan Higgs.

Police said the boy was playing with the handgun on Sept. 10 when one of his older brothers tried to take it away, and the gun discharged. D'juan and his two brothers, ages 7 and 11 at the time, had been alone in the apartment, where Anderson said the unregistered gun was kept in a closet.

"I hope this leaves a lasting impression that you won't leave the children alone again," Circuit Judge Charles Nelson said.
