The Senate approved a bill that would establish a day to recognize labor leader Cesar Chavez, although it will not give schoolchildren or state employees any additional holidays.

The amended SB39 was passed 22-7 after sponsoring Sen. James Evans, R-Salt Lake, inserted language that clarified that legislators were not authorizing schools or state offices to close. It would allow the Utah Board of Education to develop curriculum to use on Cesar Chavez Day, which would be March 31.
