OGDEN — A suspected drug dealer shot a police officer Wednesday morning before shooting and killing himself in his bathroom.

A SWAT team from the Ogden/Weber Narcotics Strike Force entered the man's residence, 244 N. Harrisville Road, at about 5 a.m. Wednesday to execute a search warrant, strike force commander Lt. Mike Ashment said. The man began firing at officers, hitting Ogden police officer Chris Kovalsky in the lower right leg.

The man, whose identity has not been released, then barricaded himself in the bathroom, Ashment said. Officers attempted to negotiate a peaceful resolution with the man, but he refused to hand over his weapon and ended up shooting himself.

The man was transported by ground ambulance to McKay-Dee Hospital, where he died shortly after his arrival.

Kovalsky was also taken to McKay-Dee Hospital, where he was treated and released. Kovalsky is a five-year veteran of the Ogden Police Department and has been on the strike force for the past two, Ashment said.

The man had been under investigation for approximately three months for dealing methamphetamine, Ashment said. A female who was in the home at the time of the incident has not been arrested.
