UTAH OLYMPIC PARK— Shifting high winds prompted the cancellation of Sunday's World Cup ski jumping event.

The competition was scheduled to begin at 10 a.m., but strong gusts made jumping impossible at start time. Organizers waited for a few hours in hopes the winds would settle before finally deciding to call off the event.

"One of the biggest problems was that the wind actually changed direction," said FIS World Cup ski jumping director Walter Hofer. "There was a head wind at the take-off and a tail wind on the landing hill, which is the worst possible situation.

"We had no 45-minute period at all today where the competition could be held."
