In her letter to the editor, Lori B. Koons implies that illiteracy rates in the United States can be tied to illegal immigration. She implies such without benefit of facts to back her up.

I fail to understand where the connection is between U.S. illiteracy rates and illegal immigration. Are there studies that suggest that illegal immigrants somehow cause illiteracy in the United States or keep illiteracy from being eradicated? Or is it more the case that her personal views include the idea that people from other countries are somehow less intelligent than U.S. citizens and contribute to the "dummying down of America"?

Social problems such as illiteracy within the United States can be attributed to many things; focusing on illegal immigration as a factor will hardly eradicate illiteracy within our borders.
