SHARE History of honor code

BYU's honor code got its start 56 years ago when two fraternities created a document on academic honesty. Here's a look at the code's evolution:

1948 — Students initiate policy on academic honesty.

1955 — Honor code committee takes counseling-based approach after student backlash over legalistic approach.

1968 — Administration assumes control of honor code and creates a list of rules students must follow.

1972 — Twelve rules and list of dress-and-grooming standards approved.

1991 — A revised, shorter code emphasizes principles over specific rules.

1998 — Reforms added, including a video, to help athletes understand honor code expectations.
