PROVO — A former Pleasant Grove police officer has been charged in 4th District Court with sexually abusing a 15-year-old girl over several months last year.

Pleasant Grove resident Jared Lyman Platt, 28, was charged on Wednesday with four counts of second-degree felony forcible sex abuse and one count of second-degree felony solicitation of sexual exploitation of a minor.

"He's obviously touching somebody without their consenting, and he's soliciting child pornography," Utah County prosecutor David Sturgill said of the charges. Sturgill would not detail the alleged incidents behind the charges.

Platt has not been arrested but will receive a summons with information about when to appear in the Provo courthouse. The case has been assigned to Judge Claudia Laycock.

Platt worked as a patrolman for the Pleasant Grove police department for just over three years before resigning last week, Pleasant Grove police Capt. Cody Cullimore said. His last day was April 17.

Cullimore said Thursday that he was unaware of the charges against Platt.

"I know that there were some things under investigation by the Utah County Sheriff's Department," Cullimore said. "I did not know he's been charged with a crime."

Sturgill would not say how Platt knew the 15-year-old girl.

If convicted of the charges, Platt could receive a maximum sentence of 1-15 years in Utah State Prison and $10,000 in fines for each second-degree felony.
