"The Secret Origin of Good Readers: Comic Books and Graphic Novels," a May Day celebration, Mother's Day card creation activities, a springtime magic show and a bike-to-your-library day highlight the next month of youth-oriented events at area libraries.

The "Secret Origin" comic book event will be Saturday, May 8, 11 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. at the Salt Lake City Library, 210 E. 400 South. It will be a workshop for educators about using comics and graphic novels to improve reading. Presenters will include Mike Carlin, senior group editor of DC Comics; Mimi Cruz, Night Flight Comics manager, and others.

The public can also meet Carlin on May 8, 4:40-6 p.m. at Night Flight Comics on Library Square.

Mother's Day cards can be created at the Smith Library, 810 E. 3300 South, on Saturday, May 1, during regular library hours. The West Jordan Library, 1970 W. 7800 South, will celebrate May Day with some spring origami fun at 1 p.m.

Christopher Fair will present a springtime magic show on Saturday, May 8, at 11 a.m. at the Whitmore Library, 2197 E. 7000 South. And Friday, May 21, will be "Bike to Your Library Day" at the Columbus Library, 2530 S. 500 East. Those who stop by the library desk with their bike helmet on that day will receive a free bookmark.

Tuesdays, 11 a.m.: Preschool storytimes at the Central Davis Branch Library, 155 N. Wasatch Drive, Layton.

Wednesdays, 1:30 p.m.: Preschool storytime at the South Branch Davis Library, 725 S. Main, Bountiful.

Thursday, 4:15 p.m.: "Children's Corner" event at the Provo Library, Academy Square, will feature a "Fractured Fairy Tales Puppet Show." Limited to 40 children, call 852-6682 to pre-register.

Saturday, 1-3 p.m.: Dog Day Afternoons at the Salt Lake City, 210 E. 400 South; the Chapman Library, 577 S. 900 East; and at the Day-Riverside Library, 1575 W. 1000 North. Kids can read to therapy animals. (Repeats other Saturdays in May at the Salt Lake City, Day-Riverside and some other libraries.)

Saturday, 2 p.m.: "Celebrate Day of the Child, Day of the Book" at the Hunter Library, 4740 W. 4100 South.

Monday, 7 p.m.: "Origami for Mom" at the East Millcreek Library, 2266 E. Evergreen Ave. Make a present for Mom or Grandmother for Mother's Day. (Also, Friday, May 7, 4:30 p.m. at the Herriman Library and on Saturday, May 8, 1 p.m. at the Magna Library, 8339 W. 3500 South.)

Thursday, May 6, 4 p.m.: Kids Club at the Riverton Library, 12860 S. Redwood Road. Stories and activities. Tickets are required. Call 944-7677.

Friday, May 7, 11 a.m.: Preschool storytimes at the Chapman Library, 577 S. 900 West.

Saturday, May 8, 11 a.m.: "Sing in Spring" at the Park Library, 4870 S. 2700 West, with performer Dave Hunt.

Saturday, May 8, 11 a.m.: "The Magic of Ming Fu" at the West Valley Library, 2880 W. 3650 South. Magic, songs and ventriloquism.

Saturday, May 8, 2 p.m.: "Bug Tales" at the Salt Lake City Library, 210 E. 400 South, by Red Butte Garden. Stories, exhibits and crafts celebrating bugs.

Tuesday, May 11, 11 a.m.: Preschool storytimes at the Anderson Branch, 1135 S. 2100 East, and the Day-Riverside Branch, 1575 W. 1000 North.

Tuesday, May 11, 7 p.m.: "Spring Storytelling Extravaganza" at the Park Library, 4870 S. 2700 West. Children of all ages can listen to master storyteller Lora Schmidt.
