NEW ORLEANS — Gene Sauers and Paul Azinger — who between them have just two victories over the last decade — shared the clubhouse lead in Thursday's rain-delayed first round of the $5.1 million HP Classic.
They had 6-under 66s before rain swept into the area, suspending play for almost 3 1/2 hours. Play resumed at 5:30 p.m., but 75 players were unable to finish their rounds before play was called again because of darkness.
The players were to return to English Turn and complete the first round at 7 a.m. today.
Robert Damron was 6-under with one hole to play, while Chris DiMarco was minus-6 though 14.
ITALIAN OPEN: At Milan, Mark Roe capped an 8-under 64 with an eagle and shared the first round lead of the Italian Open with Gregory Havret. Michael Campbell and Christopher Hanell were one shot back after a windy day at Tolcinasco Golf & Country Club.
Ian Poulter, trying to win the tournament for the third time in five years, had a 68.
LPGA TOUR: At Stockbridge, Ga., Christina Kim shot a 7-under 65 and held a one-stroke lead over Grace Park after the first round of the Chick-fil-A Charity Championship at Eagles Landing Country Club. Cristie Kerr, Lorie Kane and Becky Morgan were at 67, while defending Se Ri Pak had a 68. Annika Sorenstam, coming back from a three-week break after winning two of her first three LPGA events in 2004, birdied her last two holes for a 71.
