1918 ~ 2004
Verde Washburn Hughes, 85, passed away in St. George, Utah on Tuesday April 6, 2004 after a short illness.
She was born November 2, 1918 in Blanding, San Juan, Utah to Alvin Lavell and Wasel Amelia Black Washburn. She married Eldon Wesley Hughes on December 22,1942 in the St. George LDS Temple.
Verde was an active member of the LDS Church and served in many callings. She served in the California Mission from 1940-1941 and later in the Las Vegas Mission with her husband.
She influenced many lives for good and has been a positive example to all. She was the curator of the Mesquite Museum for many years. Those who knew her lovingly called her Grandma Hughes.
Verde is survived by children: Verlee (Stan) Peterson, Art (Sharyn) Hughes, Dixie (Bruce) Fish, Jim (Sallie) Hughes, Tom (Patti) Hughes, Ann (Robert) Imler, Susan (Ed) Ruth, Hali (Tony) Beckstead, Marie (Vay) Mickelson, David (Lynnette) Hughes, Greg (Sabrina) Hughes, Dot (Mark) McConnell, 55 grandchildren, 52 great-grand-children, brothers, Lark (Arlea) Washburn, J. Ballard (Barbara) Washburn, and sisters, Valgene (Charles) Ogles, Velyn (Kelly) Nicholes, Veloy (Ray) Hansen, Virginia (Mark) Oldroyd. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, two brothers; Berk and Aldean, and one sister; Vela Hawkins, and a grandson; Wesley Fish.
Funeral Services will be held Sat., April 10, 2004 at 11 a.m. in the Whipple LDS Church, in Mesquite, Nevada. A viewing will be held Fri. evening from 6-8 p.m. and Sat. morning from 9-10:30 a.m. in the Whipple LDS Church. Internment will be in the Mesquite City Cemetery under the direction of Virgin Valley Mortuary.
