1911 ~ 2004
Roy C. Ray, 93, passed away Sunday, April 4, 2004 in Payson, Utah.
He was born March 13, 1911 in Jackson, Ohio to Charles William and Catherine (Kate) Louise Fienup Ray.
He attended and graduated from public school in Jackson, Ohio. Roy was very active in sports and being very tall, was given the nickname of "Shorty". This nickname stuck with Roy throughout life.
Roy married Freda B. Evans on April 5, 1932. They had two children, Jeannie Hanks and Charles Ray. Roy and Freda enjoyed traveling throughout the country. They were active in the United Methodist Church in Daingerfield, Texas where they lived for 43 years. They were married for 59 years until her passing in 1991. In 1992, Roy returned to Utah to be near his family.
His occupation was an electrical foreman for the steel manufacturing in Illinois, Texas, and at Geneva Steel Works in Utah. He retired from the steel industry after 43 years of service. He was a member of various Masonic Lodges for over 50 years.
He enjoyed rock collecting, genealogy, antiques, and furniture restoration. Roy was a skilled craftsman with an affinity for woodworking.
He is preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Freda; his son, Charles Evans Ray; a sister, Carrie C. Leach; and an infant brother and sister.
He is survived by his daughter, Jeannie (Richard) Hanks of Salem; four grandchildren: Connie H. McVey of Salem; Mark R. Hanks of Provo; Charlon R. Govreau of Festus, MO; and Rick Ray of Riverton, UT; 14 great-grandchildren and one great-great-grandson.
Graveside services under the direction of Walker Family Mortuary of Spanish Fork will be held Friday, April 9th at 11 a.m. at the Salem City Cemetery, 130 East 965 South.
