"Bunny"

On Saturday May 1, 2004, we lost a great neighbor and a good friend. Bunny Howard died peacefully in a Salt Lake hospital after a long struggle with emphysema.

Bunny was born September 19, 1932, in Los Angeles, California. Her parents were Philip C. North, Union Pacific Conductor, and Regina Stenderup North, UPRR Dispatch Clerk. Growing up in Los Angeles and West Hollywood, she started her career with the railroad industry as a PBX Operator for the Santa Fe Railroad. In the 1970's she moved to Salt Lake and transferred to the Union Pacific Railroad. When the UPRR opened non-traditional jobs to women, Bunny became a Railroad Engineer, a position she held until she retired with 36 years of service.

Her nickname "Bunny" came from her passion for "bunny rabbits" and her eclectic collection of ceramic, glass, wood, and brass rabbits that she added to each year. Bunny was the glue that held our neighborhood together and we were richer for her participation. Everyone she met belonged to her extended family. This included neighbors, mail carriers, sanitation workers, and anyone else that came into the neighborhood. Bunny loved her cats, garage sales, cookbooks, and her yard. She was a great cook and everyone looked forward to her annual open house.

Bunny is survived by her brother, P. Randall North, and wife, Michelle, Bodega Bay, CA; nephew, Russell C. North, wife, Kimberly, and their children, Scott and Svea, Alta, CA; nephew, Eric R. North, wife, Lisa, and their children, Mathew and Christian, Rocklin, CA; nephew, Todd A. North, Newport, NC; niece, Nichol L. Lee, Alameda, CA; and niece, Dawn N. Currie, and husband, Ryan, Burlin-game, CA; and close friends too numerous to mention.
