Three cheers for Jerry Johnston's comments on the Mexican culture (May 8)! I was one of many who once feared the mass immigration of Mexicans into the United States. But one thing changed my mind: getting to know many of them personally.

I work in construction, and while many of my fellow citizens refused the work we offered or were poor workers, Mexicans willingly came to work and quickly learned to equal and even outperform our other workers. More than half of our work force is now from Latin American countries.

Americans have so much wealth, freedom and power. Why does it hurt so much to share what we have with others?

Articles like the one Johnston wrote greatly help in the effort to break down the walls we so quickly throw up out of fear and prejudice.
