ROOF BEING INSTALLED: To the great relief of organizers, a section of roof for the main Olympic stadium began moving into place Monday in a crucial step toward completing the centerpiece of the Athens Games.

In meeting a deadline set by IOC inspectors, Athens officials clearly are intent on avoiding the humiliating spectacle of an unfinished roof when the world's athletes assemble in three months.

One of the two 231-foot-high half-domes crept along tracks pulled by hydraulic jacks, and officials said it could reach its anchor location by today.

RETIREMENT: Two-time Olympian Adam Heidt, an eight-year member of the U.S. luge team, is retiring. Heidt, 26, was fourth at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, the best finish for an American in singles.

CHANGES IN MIAMI: The Miami Dolphins are shaking up their offensive coaching staff for the second time this offseason.

Joel Collier is out as offensive coordinator for medical reasons and will be replaced by Chris Foerster, who was hired in February as tight ends coach.

Collier returns to his old position of running backs coach, which he held the previous six seasons. Bernie Parmalee will move from running backs coach to tight ends coach.

THOMAS ARRESTED: Former NFL star Thurman Thomas was arrested and charged with marijuana possession, police said Monday.

Thomas, in Fairhope, La., to play in a charity golf tournament, was arrested at a hotel early Saturday. He had one partially smoked marijuana cigarette in his possession, Fairhope police spokesman Cpl. Craig Sawyer said.

REPLAY REVISION: The NCAA basketball rules committee has proposed eliminating the period-ending buzzer in determining if a shot counts.

The proposal, released Monday, would use the game clock to determine if the shot was taken in time. If the clock is unclear during the officials' viewing of a replay, then the red light behind the backboard would be the determining factor.

If neither is clear, then the original call by the officials would stand.

The buzzer, previously the first determinant, would be eliminated as a factor.

The new rule will be voted on next month. Division II and III schools are not required to have lights behind the backboards.

BACK TO GONZAGA: Gonzaga scoring leader Ronny Turiaf will return for his senior season, the 6-foot-10 forward said Monday.
