Highland's Miguel Rios and Jesus Rodriguez each scored a goal Monday as the Rams wrapped-up Region 5 play with an impressive 2-1 victory over East.
East could've locked up the region's No. 2 seed with a victory but never played with that sense of urgency. With the loss, Olympus earned the No. 2 seed in Region 5, while East will go in as No. 3 and Woods Cross as No. 4.
The victory didn't help Highland at all, as it was already locked into the No. 5 seed.
ALL-SPORTS HOME STRETCH: Every year since the 1978-79 school year, the Deseret Morning News has presented an All-Sports Award to the school in each classification who enjoyed the best overall athletic season.
Schools earn all-state points for placing in the top eight positions at state in sports sanctioned by the Utah High School Activities Association. Ten points were awarded for first, eight for second, six for third, five for fourth, four for fifth, three for sixth, two for seventh and one for eighth in the sports of football, cross country, golf, basketball, wrestling, swimming, baseball, track, soccer, tennis, volleyball and softball. Points are divided when teams tie.
With just two weeks left in the 2003-04 season, here's a look at the front-runners as the season comes to a close.
In Class 5A, defending champion Skyline trails Brighton 63.5 to 61 with five state tournaments remaining.
In Class 4A, defending champion Mountain View trails East 41.5 to 40.5 with six state titles to come. Timpview (36.5), Lone Peak (35) and Bountiful (34) aren't far behind.
With four sports remaining in 3A, it's a two-team race between defending champion Judge (61) and region rival Park City (57).
In 2A, the race has come down to Juan Diego (58.5) and Richfield (48.5). Only track championships remain in 2A, and both schools are outstanding track teams.
Waterford has all but locked up the 1A all-sport award with 47.5 points and only three sports remaining. Duchesne is a distant second with 29.5, followed by Panguitch and Wayne with 29.
HOCHSTRASSER TO BOISE: Tooele wrestler Andrew Hochstrasser, who won an incredible four individual state championships during his career, signed a letter of intent last week to wrestler for Boise State University.
Only nine wrestlers in Utah history have ever been four-time state champs. Hochstrasser finished his prep career with a 170-8 record, including a 38-1 mark this past year.
He has also been a high school All-American and a Junior All-American.
