John Guertler, left, tries to get his son, Parker, to look up at him so he can take his picture in front of the Jupiter Steam Engine at the re-enactment of the driving of the golden spike, below, and the completion of the world's first transcontinental railroad at Promontory Point, Utah. The Union Pacific and Central Pacific railroads met at this juncture in 1869, which is 690 miles east of Sacramento and 1,087 miles west of Omaha. The driving of the golden spike in May of that year symbolized the completion of the iron ribbon across the continent. On July 30, 1965, the Golden Spike National Historic Site was created to observe that historic event.
