Flip the calendar back to 2003.

Layton's No. 1 soccer team has been on cruise control all season, but in the second to last game of the season the Lancers' bid for a perfect season comes crashing down against region runner-up Viewmont.

In the playoffs the very next week, an angry Layton won the title by outscoring its four opponents 23-2.

Now, flip those calendars forward again.

Brighton owns a 15-0-0 record and is one game from a perfect regular season. Low and behold, against region runner-up Bingham last Friday, the Bengals' bid for an unprecedented 20-0 season was extinguished with a 2-0 loss.

With the 5A soccer playoffs getting under way this Thursday, will the No. 1 Bengals follow the playoff example set by Layton last year?

One thing's for sure, it won't be easy.

Brighton's first-round game is against Fremont, fresh of its season-ending upset of No. 5 Viewmont

In reality, the victory wasn't stunning at all. Of Fremont's 15 games this year, only five were decided by more than one goal. Among those narrow losses were two against defending-champion Layton, one against Region 1 champion Weber and another against region runner-up Viewmont.

Unless Brighton buries Fremont early, it will find out what Region 1 teams already know — Fremont is much better than its record.

This is just one of eight intriguing first-round games:

Taylorsville at Riverton will be a dog fight. Riverton was the surprising team in Region 2 by finishing third, but closed the season with a 4-6 record. T-Ville, meanwhile, has one of the best finishers in Jared Trussell.

West Jordan at Weber could be a blowout. After all, Weber was clearly the best team in Region 1 this year with nine more points than second-place Viewmont. Then again, West Jordan has an solid midfield that could keep things close.

Bingham at Layton, what more could a fan want? Defending champion Layton struggled to a Region 1 fourth-place finish. Bingham, on the other hand, has won 11 of its last 12 games thanks in large part to Corey Ackerman.

Davis at Cottonwood may not produce the eventual champ, but the Darts could give the Region 3 runner-up Colts, led by Ernesto Bueno and Tyler Christiansen, all they can handle.

Alta and Viewmont is all about revenge. In the first-round last year Viewmont beat Alta 7-1. Then, a few months ago, Viewmont trounced the Hawks again 6-1. It will be interesting to see what kind of fight the Hawks have in them.

Jordan at Skyline isn't your typical No. 6 seed vs. No. 1 seed game. The 'Diggers are a shell of the team that won the state title two years ago, but coach Shaine Herrin has Jordan playing disciplined soccer again.

Hunter at Northridge would've been a great football game, but boys soccer? Northridge is the unlikely No. 3 seed out of Region 1, but Hunter isn't scared. The Wolverines beat the Knights in the preseason this year.
