BASEBALL: The Utes (19-27) face Utah Valley State (18-16) twice this week. On Tuesday, the Utes travel to Provo for a 7 p.m. game at Larry H. Miller Field on the Brigham Young campus. On Wednesday, the two teams face off at 2 p.m. at Ute Field.

Utah opens a four-game series at UNLV Friday.

SOFTBALL: At Riverside, Calif., USU snapped a 17-game losing streak and started its own modest two-game winning streak this weekend at UC Riverside. The Aggies dropped the first game of a Friday doubleheader with the Highlanders 6-3 before responding with an 8-3 victory in the nightcap and adding a 5-2 win on Saturday. In the final game, Leslie Higley recorded a win as she scattered seven hits in a complete game as USU pounded out 10 hits.

TRACK & FIELD: Thrower Kelli Burton, a sophomore on the Utah

State track and field team, was named the Big West Conference Female Field Athlete of the Week.

The conference honor marked the second straight week an Aggie received that award as thrower Josh Sides won the men's honor last week. The USU honor is her second such award in the last three weeks.

Burton, who is from Kaysville set a school record in the hammer throw with a toss of 193-02 at the USU-hosted Wilson Motor Qualifier last Thursday. Burton also won the discus (167-01) and the shot put (51-01.50) in the meet.

The USU track and field team will head to Irvine, Calif., for the Big West Conference Championships, Wednesday through Saturday.

BASEBALL: For the second time this season, SUU freshman right-hander Ryan Zimmerman was named Mid-Continent Conference pitcher of the week for his efforts in the Thunderbirds' series victory over Valparaiso last week. Zimmerman improved to 5-4 on the season after notching his second nine-inning, complete-game win of his young career in SUU's 8-1 series-finale win over Valpo Saturday.

The Thunderbirds travel to Illinois for a crucial four-game Mid-Con series at Chicago State this Saturday and Sunday.

TRACK & FIELD: SUU's outdoor track and field teams will gunning for a dual season sweep as the Thunderbirds host the 2004 Mid-Continent Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships this weekend at Eccles Coliseum in Cedar City.

Both Thunderbird squads enter the weekend poised to complete the conference "Triple Crown" as SUU swept both the cross country and indoor track titles earlier this season.
