PRICE — With six straight 1A prep golf titles in hand, Waterford is trying to make it seven straight championships this week at the Carbon Country Club. The Ravens took a step in that direction Tuesday with a dominating performance. With the first round complete, Waterford leads Wasatch Academy 304-346.
Waterford's Mike McRae and Valley's Jake Leigh are tied for the individual lead at 71. McRae, who is the 1A defending champion, had two tap-in birdies. His first birdie came after he narrowly missed an eagle chance.
The 1A golfers battled windy conditions throughout the round. "The wind didn't make the fairways easy," McRae said, "but I lost my strokes on the greens."
Leigh fired a 32 on the back nine to move into his tie for first. Waterford's Ari Goot, the 2002 champ, is six shots back after a 77 in the first round. Luke Scott from Wasatch Academy is tied for third place. The six Waterford golfers all occupy positions in the top 18.
Wasatch Academy is in second with a 346 score. Valley is in third at 349.
