PAYSON — The American Cancer Society will honor cancer survivors June 11 and June 12 at the Relay for Life.

The annual fund-raising event at Payson Memorial Park includes both a relay race and luminaria ceremony. South Utah County cancer survivors from Springville to Nephi in Juab County are invited to walk the first lap of the relay, wearing a medallion signifying their victory over the disease. The lap is a marked pathway through the park, Diana Erb, city events coordinator said. To participate, cancer survivors should call the American Cancer Society at 801-373-5886.

A reception for survivors begins at 5:30 p.m. with the relay beginning at 6 p.m. At least 10 teams that have pledged to raise money for the American Cancer Society will walk the track with each team member participating individually. City employees, businesses and individuals have created the teams.

The relay will last 18 hours, ending at noon on June 12, she said.

A carnival atmosphere will last all night with games, entertainment, bands and food. The nearby city pool will be open.

The luminaria ceremony begins at 9:30 p.m., in which the cancer society will recognize cancer victims. Individuals or businesses can make contributions in memory of folks who have died from the disease and in honor of those who have survived the illness.

All proceeds earned at this and other American Cancer Society events held throughout the state will be used for cancer detection, education, patient service and research programs in Utah.
