PROVO — Melissa Sevy, a Brigham Young University undergraduate, has been recognized as Student of the Year by the Utah chapter of the Council for Exceptional Children for her work as co-president of the BYU student chapter and working with individuals with disabilities in the Provo community.

Sevy, majoring in special education, received the Jeanette Misaka Award at the council's annual conference in St. George. In addition to Sevy's recognition, the BYU chapter was awarded four of the six student chapter awards. The chapter was recognized for fund raising, highest growth, most creative activity and best publicity.

The Council for Exceptional Children is an international professional organization dedicated to improving education for individuals with exceptionalities, students with disabilities and/or the gifted.
