SPANISH FORK — Two home runs by Nick Welsh sparked the Dons' offense as Spanish Fork beat Logan 7-2 Wednesday to stay alive in the 4A state baseball tournament. The Grizzlies lost their second straight game and were eliminated.

Neither team could get anything going in the first two innings, but Logan came to life first with a double by Riley Nelson and two Spanish Fork errors, which led to two Grizzly runs in the third.

"We were playing not to lose rather than to win," Spanish Fork coach Jeff Nelson said.

But Aaron Binks started the Dons' comeback with a triple to deep center field in the third inning.

"I'm proud that we didn't roll over and die after the tough loss (Tuesday) and falling behind early," Nelson said.

The 2-1 loss to Cyprus on Tuesday put the Dons in a must-win situation, and they came through.

"We ran the bases well today and got some extra bases from our heads-up running," Nelson said. "I just challenged the kids to come out and extend their season, and they did."

Spanish Fork got one run back in the third but really came to life in the fourth inning. Welsh pounded his first home run past the left field fence and tied the game. Dallas Pruitt smacked a double down the third base line and Kaid Gordon hammered a single straight up the middle for what turned out to be the game-winning RBI.

Riley Gordon tripled to deep right field to start the fifth and Brady Degraw followed with a double and his second RBI before Welsh belted his second home run over the left field fence to put the game out of reach.

Spanish Fork pitcher Jordan Daley hurled a solid three-hitter and didn't allow a single earned run in the complete-game performance.

"Jordan went out and did a great job on the bump," Nelson said. "And Nick, who's been struggling at the plate, came out and got the two home runs."
