Waterford confirmed its dominance in 1A prep golf, taking the state title for the seventh consecutive year.
More specifically, though, the day belonged to Waterford's McRae brothers, Mike and Robert.
In his senior year, Mike repeated as the 2004 1A state champion and was in good company with his younger brother Robert, who finished second.
Mike McRae closed Tuesday's round with a 71, tied for the individual lead with Valley's Jake Leigh.
Despite cold and rainy conditions to begin the final round, Mike McRae continued his consistent play to secure a second 71 and the state title.
"That was tough, some of the hardest conditions I've played in," he said. "I focused on fairways and greens and it worked out,."
Robert McRae, a sophomore who entered the day tied for third and one group behind the leaders, overtook Leigh on the back nine for his second-place finish.
"He kept giving me warnings all day that he was coming," Mike McRae said.
According to Robert McRae, the second day was more difficult because of the weather, but it forced him to keep his mental game going.
"I've never been so cold in my life," he said.
The pair must have inherited a gene for personal modesty, though. Rather than discuss their own game, they both complimented the play of the other and the rest of the field.
"Mike played awesome," Robert McRae pointed out while Mike said his younger brother can definitely look forward to winning his first title next year.
Five out of Waterford's top six golfers are seniors this year, leaving coach Jeff Instefjord with lots of work to do in order to create another winning team for next season. "This has been a special group of kids that I've had the last four years, once-in-a-lifetime," Instefjord said. "They've got a ton of talent, they love to practice and they're as good of kids as they are golfers."
