OREM — The Utah Valley State College Gifts and Grants Committee awarded 21 faculty and staff members an Exceptional Merit Grant for the 2004 academic year.
Over the past seven years, the UVSC Foundation has awarded more than $220,000 in such grants to underwrite on-campus faculty and staff projects that advance the mission of the college and enhance the creative and nurturing learning environment that enriches students. This year, the foundation allocated $35,000 for merit grants, with an additional $8,000 from private donations.
Recipients include: Marinda Ashman (athletic tutoring program), Lori Barber (equipment for the Nursing Learning Center), Lyn Ellen Bennett (11th Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Commemoration), Tina Carlisle (catering services vehicle safety), Jenny Chamberlain (UVSC Clothesline Project), and Bryan Eldredge (Deaf Studies Today academic conference).
Other recipients include: B. Diane George (bio-feedback therapy research), Ruth Gowans ("smart classrooms" for off-campus students), James Harris (DNA imaging and analysis center), Daniel Horns (groundwater monitoring network in the UVSC wetlands area), Bruce Jackson (interactive CD for the Center for the Advancement of Leadership), David Jordan (student/faculty research database), and Ruhul Kuddus (tissue culture facility).
Grants were also awarded to: Hyunmee Lee (promoting excellence in art), John MacFarlane (training adjunct instructors on WebCT), Phil Matheson (equipment to study energy and its uses), Kate McPherson (Shaping the American West international conference), Bryce Rytting (UVSC Performing Arts Series 2004-05), Mina Wayman (elder sensitivity training for beginning nursing students at UVSC), Marti Webster (pre-law advisement center), and David Yells (adjunct training workshop).
