BYU seniors Devin Scoresby and Curtis Pugsley lead the 10-man decathlon field after the first day of competition at the 2004 Mountain West Conference Track & Field Championships in Las Vegas.
Scoresby finished the first day of competition with 3,900 points to lead the group while Pugsley finished in second place with 3,863 points. After winning the final event of the day, the 400 meters, BYU junior Devin Howe moved in to fifth place with 3,611 points.
"We're in good shape," BYU head men's coach Mark Robison said. "I'm very pleased with our performances today. There's no reason why we shouldn't expect that to continue tomorrow."
In the women's competition, Anna-Lee Walcott recorded a personal-best in the high jump (5-07) and a heptathlon best 14.54 in the 100m hurdles to finish Day 1 in second place with 3,149 points. Teammate Liis Berendsen turned in a personal record in the 100m hurdles and a collegiate best 26.20 in the 200m to finish the day in third place. UNLV's Christine Spence leads the 18-person field with 3,297 points.
"Anna-Lee had a great day," head women's coach Craig Poole said. "She's been banged up this season, and this is only the second heptathlon she has competed. She's pretty tired after today's competition."
The heptathlon and decathlon competitions will conclude today with track and field events scheduled to begin on Friday. The competition will conclude on Saturday.

BIG SKY: Two Weber State athletes are in second place in the decathlon and heptathlon after Day 1 of the 2004 Big Sky Outdoor Championship. Robbie Friendt is in second place in the men's decathlon after five events Wednesday. Shanna Wylie is second place in the women's heptathlon after four events.
