Randy Barton is no stranger to singer/songwriters. He was the producer of the Wooden Dog concert series held in Trolley Square a few years ago and the Mountain Town Stages concerts at The Canyons resort in Park City.
For the past two years, he has been the producer for the music festival Alone on Stage in Park City.
This festival is an all-day event that takes place at two separate Park City venues — the Egyptian Theater and Plan B. "The idea is to intermingle national touring artists with local artists," said Barton. "The performances are solo acoustic music that is like a mini-version of when MTV did its 'Unplugged' shows."
MTV's "Unplugged" concerts featured rock bands taking all the distortion and heavy electric effects out of their songs and singing in an intimate venue. "That's what Alone on Stage is all about," said Barton. "This year's roster features Kelly Joe Phelps, Greg Brown and Jeff Lang. The local artists are Leraine Horstmanshoff, Doug Wintch and Mary Beth Maziarz.
"I would eventually like to see this festival become a multi-day, multi-venue event," said Barton. "Right now, we have a core following that buy a pass and spend all day and night going from venue to venue and enjoying some great intimate music.
"The good thing is the fact that the venues are just a few yards away from each other."
Greg Brown will play two shows at the Egyptian Theatre, 6 and 8 p.m. Kelly Joe Phelps will also perform at the Egyptian Theatre at 9:30 p.m. until 1:30 a.m. Local guests artists will be Maziarz and Gary Russell.
Steve Forbert and Jeff Lang will perform at Plan B. Forbert's concerts will be at 6 p.m. and 8 p.m. Lang's show will begin at 9:30 p.m. Local artists Wintch and Horstmanshoff will play with Lang.
Tickets are $22 and $27 for the 6 and 8 p.m. shows and $12 and $15 for the 9:30 p.m. show; festival passes are $32 and $37 (1-888-322-9364).
