Vanna Hunter says that the purpose of a primary election is to select candidates that specifically represent the goals and ideals of the given party and compares this to the right of a religion to select its own leaders. However, there is a big difference: If a candidate goes forward to win the general election, he or she will end up representing everyone in that jurisdiction, not just the members of his or her party. The same is not true with religious leaders.

Keeping that in mind, it is only fair that I, as a Democrat, should be able to vote for the Republican candidate I feel is closest to center on the issues, and vice versa.
