Utah's bankruptcy filings slowed a bit in April, according to statistics released Friday by the Utah district of the U.S. Bankruptcy Court.

The April total was 1,947 filings, down from 2,081 in March and 2,059 in April 2003. Filings for the first four months of 2004 were down 7 percent when compared to the same period of 2003.

The April total includes 1,398 filings for Chapter 7; 544 filings for Chapter 13; and five filings for Chapter 11.

Total bankruptcy filings in Utah peaked in 2002, when 22,052 filings occurred. In 2003, the total was 21,917.
