LAS VEGAS — BYU leads both the men's and women's standings after the day three of at the Mountain West Conference Outdoor Track and Field Championships.
The Cougar women have staked a 40-point lead over second-place Colorado State after posting first-place finishes in the 10,000 meter, the 3,000-meter steeplechase and the long jump. BYU finished the day with 93 points, while CSU is second at 53, and defending champion San Diego State is third with 45 points. Utah is sixth with 11 points.
On the men's side, BYU holds a 34-point lead over Colorado State after wins in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, the discus and the javelin. The Cougars stand at 93 points, while CSU is second at 59, and Air Force is third at 51.5. Utah is sixth with eight points.
The meet concludes today.
BYU's Matthew Adams won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in 8:59.72, just .28 off the MWC Championship record, after placing second in the event in last year's meet. Cougar freshman Niklas Arrhenius won the discus with a throw of 188 feet, 2 inches, and BYU's Matt Hickman won the javelin with an NCAA qualifying throw of 210 feet, 8 inches.
Lisa Antonelli won the 3,000-meter steeplechase in an NCAA regional time of 10:29.62, part of a 1-2-4-5 finish by BYU. The Cougars did even better with a 1-2-3-4 finish in the 10,000, led by Emily Raymond's 36:08.50. And BYU freshman Amy Menlove held off two other freshmen to win the long jump at 19 feet, 11 inches.
BIG SKY CHAMPIONSHIPS: The Weber State men are in first place after the first day of the Big Sky Outdoor Championships, with their 77 points leading by 11.5 going into Saturday's final day. The Wildcat women are in second, trailing Northern Arizona 69 to 47.
WSU's Ken Richardson won the men's 3,000-meter steeplechase with a time of 9:00.07, while Vanessa Wynne won the women's discus with a throw of 161-00, more than seven feet farther than her closest competitor.
Also, Wiley King set a Big Sky and Steward Stadium record in the 110-meter hurdles trials at 13.71 seconds.
