SPANISH FORK — Outdoor water prices in Spanish Fork may be coming down, thanks to the city's new multimillion-dollar pressurized irrigation system

The $1.24 per 1,000 gallons rate got the city through its first year of paying its debt to build the system and should be reduced, said utility board chairman David Tuttle.

His recommendation to city officials: Drop the price to $1 in July.

The $16 per month base rate, which residents pay year-round for the new system, will remain.

Some 250 homes were built in Spanish Fork last year, which spread the cost out a bit more, he said. "Conservation is the bottom line. The city has lots of water, it's just that all of it is not good," Tuttle said.

The goal of the new irrigation system is to use the poorer water, he said. However, the system is fed by two deep wells that pump culinary water to a five-acre reservoir in the foothills south of town where it enters into the irrigation system. That water will someday be replaced with Central Utah Project water, City Engineer Richard Heap says.
