The Mormon Tabernacle Choir's Music and the Spoken Word broadcast May 9 featured accolades to mothers everywhere and a special a tribute to Marjorie P. Hinckley, who died April 6.
After the broadcast, President Hinckley spoke to members of the choir. First, he congratulated them on the honor the choir received April 20 when it was inducted into the NAB Broadcasting Hall of Fame in Las Vegas, Nev. "It came late," he said of the honor. "I think you should have been inducted 50 years ago. Nevertheless, we are grateful for that honor, which is tremendously significant."
Next, he gave personal thanks to the choir. "I want ... to thank you for your great kindness in singing at the funeral of Sister Hinckley," he said. "I know that it was an imposition to ask you to sing, because of the very heavy schedule under which you were working at that time. Thank you so very, very much. We'll always be deeply grateful to you for that."
He asked the Lord's blessings on the choir members, and thanked them "for all you do." He said, "Please know that the entire Church is very, very proud of you, that you bring honor to this work. May you continue to go forward, singing to the hearts of millions all across the world."
