With a goal of displaying more than 100 paintings, this year's Days of '47/Deseret Morning News Landscape Art Show, "Color of the Land," will surpass its previous efforts of representing the notable talent of Utah's landscape painters.
Art juried into the show will be on display from July 19 through the 24th in the Nauvoo and Bountiful rooms of the Joseph Smith Memorial Building.
This year, money will be awarded in six areas: winner of the Purchase Award will receive $5,000 (the artwork, as in previous years, will become part of the Deseret Morning News' corporate art collection). First-, second- and third-place winners will receive $1,000, $800 and $600, respectively. There will also be two Honorable Mention Awards of $200 each. A People's Choice Award, a non-monetary prize, will also be added this year.
Jurors for this year's exhibit are Rob Colvin, Marilee Campbell and Blanche Wilson.
Colvin, winner of last year's Purchase Award, studied with Glen Edwards at Utah State University, freelanced for such clients as IBM, AT&T and Newsweek and has been painting landscapes now for several years.
Campbell, a member of the Pastel Society of America, enjoys plein-air painting but is equally at home in the studio. She is a former part-time art instructor at Brigham Young University.
Wilson, one of the "Most Honored Artists of Utah," is one of Utah's premiere printmakers and continues to produce landscapes of high quality.
Beginning Monday, entry forms for the competition/art show will be available at local art galleries and museums throughout the state. Forms will also be available online soon at www.deseretnews.com, and are now available at the newspaper's office, 30 E. 100 South, between 8 a.m.-5 p.m.
"Color of the Land" is open to all Utah artists 18 years and older, working in all 2-D mediums except photography. For more information, call Deseret Morning News marketing department at 236-6060.
