DUCHESNE — An October trial date has been set for a Duchesne man accused of murdering his ex-wife in December 2002. The original March trial date for Lloyd Harry was canceled when his court-appointed attorney, Karen Allen, was named the new Duchesne County attorney.
Harry is now represented by Salt Lake City attorney Julie George. George was one of two attorneys to answer Duchesne County's request for bids to defend Harry, who faces a total of six felony counts, including first-degree murder. None of the charges carry the death penalty.
Harry, 47, is accused of shooting his 63-year old ex-wife in the back as she sat at a kitchen counter in the Duchesne Mini Ranch cabin where the couple had been staying while waiting for their own cabin to be built.
Harry maintains the shooting was an accident. He says his gun misfired when their dog jumped up on him when he walked into the room.
He allegedly put Rosemary Kramer's body in his vehicle and left the state, disposing of it several days later in the desert near Elko, Nev. Investigators say he told them where they could find the body. The weapon was never recovered.
The couple moved to Duchesne just about three months before the shooting occurred. They had been divorced for about a year but continued to live together.
Harry, 47, who has spent about half of his life in prison, said he didn't report his wife's death immediately because he feared his criminal background would be held against him and no one would believe the shooting was an accident.
He has been held in the Duchesne County Jail since he was extradited from Nevada in December 2002.
