Southern Utah

TRACK: Southern Utah's men's and women's outdoor track and field teams made Mid-Continent Conference history by becoming the first program to win all six season league titles after completing the sweep of the outdoor crowns Saturday at Eccles Coliseum in Cedar City.

The SUU women won five more events on the day to help hold off hard-charging Western Illinois, 270-218.5, while Oral Roberts placed third with 142.5 points. Southern Utah's men also picked up five event wins on the final day to win by a 282-242.5 count over Western, with Oral Roberts coming in third (122.5).

Junior Alisha Bezanson was dominant for the T-Bird women, picking up three of SUU's five event wins to be voted Mid-Con women's athlete of the year, an honor she also won at the conference indoor meet last February. Bezanson started the day with a victory in the 800 meters (2:14.99), followed by a 1,500m title.

Junior Ransom Minyard swept both hurdle titles to lead the Thunderbird men, winning the 110m at 14.70 before coming back to post the sixth-fastest individual time in school history in the 400m at 54.32.

Chicago State rallied for five unanswered runs before holding off a late T-Bird charge in taking the opener, 6-5, while reigning Mid-Con pitcher of the week Ryan Zimmerman struck out seven in hurling a five-hit shutout to lead SUU (16-25 Mid-Con) to a 5-0 win in the seven-inning finale. Zimmerman (6-4) took control early in the finale, setting down the first eight Cougar hitters he faced.
