Prosecutors filed two first-degree felony charges Thursday against a man who allegedly raped and shot his estranged wife.
The man, 38, was charged with aggravated sexual assault and attempted criminal homicide.
A man went to his estranged wife's apartment near 200 North and 1850 West on May 6 to retrieve belongings. He pointed a large silver-barreled revolver at the woman, ordered her to disrobe and threatened to shoot her if she screamed, charges state.
The man raped the woman. He later shot her in the upper left chest as she was talking on the phone to her mother. The bullet exited her upper left back, charges state.
The woman struggled to get the gun away from the man. He shot her again. The bullet grazed her left jawline and blew off some of her hair, charges state.
The woman was hospitalized with severe injuries, including a loss of sensation in her fingers and a draining chest wound, charges state.
