COALVILLE — Outstanding high school students were honored in the 24th Northeastern Utah Sterling Scholar Awards Program, held April 27 at North Summit High School.
One hundred forty scholars competed in 14 categories for cash awards and scholarships. The awards ceremony honored winners and runners-up for their excellence in leadership, community service, citizenship and scholarship.
Jerre Holmes, principal of North Summit High, welcomed students, parents and other guests. Opening remarks were given by Paul Webb, chairman of the Northeast Utah Region Sterling Scholar Committee and coordinator at Rich High School. Shauna Peatross, committee vice chairman, introduced Derek Spriggs of the Office of High School and College Relations from Brigham Young University and currently serving as associate director, as master of ceremonies. Musical numbers were provided by the music winner and runners-up.
The Northeast program is one of four regional Sterling Scholar Awards programs that cover outlying areas of Utah. These regional programs are patterned after, though not directly administered by, the Deseret Morning News-KSL Television program started in 1962 to publicly recognize accomplishments of high school students along the Wasatch Front.
Participating schools include Altamont, Duchesne, Dugway, Grantsville, Morgan, North Summit, Park City, Rich, South Summit, Tabiona, Uintah, Union, Wasatch and Wendover high schools.
