A Wasatch Junior High student project to boost safety for deaf children has been recognized in a national competition.
Seventh-graders Stuart Childs, Ben Vayo, Nick Shifrar and Dylan Lorimar noticed motorists rarely slow down when encountering "deaf child" signs. So the Granite District students wanted to spice up the signs with lights, which research shows motorists respond to more frequently.
The student team, led by teacher Kim Stucki, was one of 30 semifinalists of nearly 1,500 applicants for the Christopher Columbus Awards, a national program challenging middle school students to improve their communities.
Eight finalists later were selected from that group to compete for $20,000 in U.S. Savings Bonds and a $25,000 grant to implement their ideas.
