University of Utah head men's golf coach Wayne Fisher will not accompany senior Garrett Clegg to the NCAA West Regionals, which take place Thursday through Saturday at the Crosswater Course in Sunriver, Ore.

The decision by University of Utah athletics department administrators and coach Fisher came following further consideration of a letter drafted by Ute golfers outlining misconduct by Fisher on the team's trip to the Mountain West Conference Championships earlier this month.

"In an effort to be as thorough as we possibly can in this process, myself, other members of the athletics department administration, coach Fisher and Garrett have discussed this situation at length in recent days," said Utah assistant athletics director Marc Amicone, who oversees the men's golf program. "After further consideration, we decided that it is in the best interest of Garrett to have an athletics department staff member other than coach Fisher accompany him to the NCAA Regionals."

Fisher said he agreed with the decision not to send him on the trip.

"Ultimately, I want what's best for Garrett," Fisher said. "I just don't want my presence to be a distraction for him."

Assistant athletic director Pete Oliszczak will go with Clegg to the tournament, which is also in Sunriver, Ore.

Fisher denied the players' allegations that he jeopardized their safety when he had two drinks on a flight to Portland, Ore., then drove the team van to Sunriver, about four hours away. Fisher was not pulled over or arrested, but five Utes sent a letter to university administrators saying they felt he should not have been driving.
