Military personnel serving in Utah can now obtain free legal help from attorneys also serving in the military who are not members of the Utah State Bar.

The new rule, recently approved by the state Supreme Court and effective since May 4, comes at the request of the state bar and the American Bar Association.

The legal services such attorneys are authorized to provide are limited to civil matters, and the attorneys cannot work for a fee or present themselves as bar-licensed attorneys. They must apply to the state bar and receive Supreme Court certification.
