PROVO — Losing a high school baseball game on a one-hitter is virtually unheard of. But unfortunately, for Olympus pitcher Spencer Matheson, that was exactly what happened.

Matheson tossed a one-hitter in a 3-0 loss to Timpanogos on Tuesday in the 4A state baseball tournament.

Timpanogos will meet Region 7 rival Lone Peak for the fourth time on Thursday at Lindquist Field in Ogden at 11 a.m. Olympus plays Murray today at 4 p.m. in an elimination game at BYU's Miller Park.

While Matheson was solid, Timpanogos ace and BYU-bound pitcher Mac Nelson was even more impressive by fanning 11 batters and tossing a two-hitter in the state tournament win.

"If we don't have great pitching tonight we lose," Timpanogos coach Kim Nelson said. "Fortunately Mac was on top of things and threw well."

Matheson's one-hitter was marred by five walks, one hit batter and two wild pitches that scored two of Timpanogos' three runs. Tyson Ford recorded the T-Wolves' only hit with a double in the second inning.

Olympus' only two hits were by Landon Fielding and Jeff Davis.

"It's not often you get doubled in hits and win by three runs," Nelson said.

Timpanogos scored its first two runs off wild pitches and added a third on a bases loaded walk.
