ANAHEIM, Calif. — Adam Riggs hit a bases-loaded single over a drawn-in outfield in the 11th inning Tuesday night, giving the Anaheim Angels a 1-0 victory over the New York Yankees.
Riggs, called up from the Salt Lake Stingers earlier in the day to replace injured third baseman Troy Glaus, lofted an opposite-field fly over the head of Gary Sheffield in right to break the scoreless tie.
Jeff DaVanon led off the 11th against Paul Quantrill (4-2) with his third single of the game, and Vladimir Guerrero followed with a single. After a sacrifice bunt by Alfredo Amezaga, Quantrill intentionally walked Casey Kotchman to get to Riggs.
Scot Shields (3-0) pitched two perfect innings for the win. The Yankees finished with only three hits — one after the third inning.
BLUE JAYS 5, TWINS 3: At Toronto, Miguel Batista wanted the special night former teammate Randy Johnson had.
Batista took a no-hit bid into the sixth inning, and Toronto handed Johan Santana his first loss in 20 starts with a victory over Minnesota.
WHITE SOX 4, INDIANS 2: At Cleveland, Jon Garland pitched seven strong innings and Chicago ended the Indians' season-high five-game winning streak.
Garland (3-2) allowed one run and five hits, struck out six and walked one.
RED SOX 7, DEVIL RAYS 3: At St. Petersburg, Fla., Tim Wakefield allowed one run in seven innings and Mark Bellhorn hit a three-run homer for Boston, which handed the Devils Rays their fourth consecutive defeat.
Bellhorn homered during a five-run seventh.
ROYALS 7, RANGERS 6: At Arlington, Carlos Beltran and Matt Stairs hit three-run homers, and Kansas City rallied from a five-run deficit to beat Texas.
Mike Sweeney also homered for the Royals, who snapped a three-game skid with only their fourth road win of the season. Angel Berroa and Benito Santiago had three hits each for the Royals, who had a season-high 16.
TIGERS 5, ATHLETICS 1: At Oakland, Rondell White and Craig Monroe homered, and Jeremy Bonderman pitched seven strong innings to lead Detroit past Oakland.
Carlos Guillen hit a two-run triple for the Tigers, who began their nine-game road trip by ending Oakland's three-game winning streak.
ORIOLES 7, MARINERS 2: At Seattle, Daniel Cabrera won for the second time since he was brought up from the minor leagues last week, leading Baltimore over Seattle.
Larry Bigbie homered and drove in three runs for the Orioles, who won for only the fourth time in 23 games at Safeco Field.
